Victims' Assistance

If you suspect or know that someone has stolen your identity, and you do not have Identity Watch protection to assist you, please follow the tips on this checklist from Federal Trade Commission to ensure that you contact the appropriate authorities as quickly as possible. With Identity Watch protection in the future, you'll have access to trained representatives who can walk you through the process and assist you in activating your Victim Action kit.

As you work through the checklist, record dates and keep careful notes of every individual and every agency you speak to and be sure to confirm the next steps in troubleshooting your identity theft case. Maintain a file and catalog all written correspondence relevant to your case. Always follow-up phoned reports of fraud to credit bureaus and creditors in writing, using certified mail and return receipt requested.

  Victim's Assistance Checklist

These guidelines are based on recommendations from the Federal Trade Commission and various guidelines from police departments and crime units focusing on the identity theft problem.

  1.

Contact the fraud departments of each of the three major credit bureaus. Tell them to:

flag your file with a fraud alert

include a statement that creditors should get your permission before opening any new accounts in your name.

  2.

Ask the credit bureaus for copies of your credit reports. Credit bureaus must give you a free copy of your report if it is inaccurate because of fraud. Review your reports carefully to make sure no additional fraudulent accounts have been opened in your name or unauthorized changes made to your existing accounts. In a few months, order new copies of your reports to verify your corrections and changes, and to make sure no new fraudulent activity has occurred.

This will alert merchants who may later be presented with the checks. Put " stop payments " on any outstanding checks that you are unsure of. Cancel your checking and savings account and obtain new account numbers. Give the bank a secret password for your account (not your mother's maiden name).

  5.

File a report with your local police or the police in the community (or communities) where the identity theft took place. Keep a copy in case your creditors need proof of the crime.
